87 R65 Ignition switch issue
« on: April 11, 2018, 11:05:28 AM »
I am hoping this will be a simple one for you gurus.  Recently, when I turn off the ignition on my 87 R65, all lights stay on as if the switch is not working.  After pulling a battery cable, it seems normal for a while and then happens again.  I am thinking this might be a relay?  Any input to help me resolve this will be greatly appreciated.

I checked the wiring diagram for the '81-'84 twin shock bikes, don't know if the mono shock bikes are any different wiring wise .
There is a lighting relay under the seat, it turns out all the lights when the starter is being used .
It looks like it is wired 'hot ' for the load circuit, powered all the time from the battery .
I don't know if your bike has the same looking relay, but it is a metal case relay on my twin shock R65's .
You could try tapping on the relay case with a screwdriver handle and see if the lights go out the next time this happens .
Correction, the relay is under the fuel tank, also there may be another large metal case part in the same area, it's the voltage regulator .
I don't know if the mono shock bikes have the upgraded red and black plastic case regulator .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Hello,
Since the monol ever bikes all share the same "hardware" except the engine, you may find luck looking at the wiring diagram of an R80 or R100 from the same year.
These bikes have a different electrical layout than the 81~84..

I don't have a diagrahm but if the headlight flasher sticks on the key won't turn off the engine. so there are some funny thing going on with the Monos.

Thanks for all the input.  Any idea where I can get my hands on a wiring diagram for the monolever?

Here is a website that has them all
But the one for yours Is not very good
Because it does not show the routing thru the relays

If you want to use a standard relay that is available at any auto parts store for the headlight relay
Just move 2 wires in the relay socket

BMW uses Type "A"
Everyone else uses Type "B"

This does not include the starter  relay
It is altogether different but can be substituted if you want to add a diode in the circuit
