K75 shafted
« on: November 19, 2007, 02:25:17 PM »
Morning all.
My house mate drives a K75.
He came home yesterday and said he had a drama in his final drive train.
Somethings gone clunk, and now the back wheel won't spin at all.

Motor is still running fine, but somethings gone wrong between the shaft and diff.

Its off to the shop, but can anyone give me an idea of what we're looking at?

By your statement, "the back wheel won't spin at all", do you mean that it is "locked up" and won't turn at all, even when just trying to push the bike, or do you mean that it won't turn when running the engine and placing the bike into gear and letting out the clutch ?  It may be that the ring gear has broken, which could jam the rear wheel sold, and which might be rather dramatic if it happened under power.   If the wheel isn't locked, but won't turn by engine power, it could be a failure in the final drive or at a couple placed
along the driveshaft, though I am not as familiar with the K-bike swingarms and driveshafts..

Pulling the driveshaft on the K75 is dead easy, easier than our venerable Airheads, so narrowing down the problem is no biggie.
Remove the wheel, shocky and final drive (support the swingarm), you will see the state of the spline onto the diff (which should be greased regularly BTY).
To check the UJ and its spline, use multigrips (protect where it grips on the driveshaft) to grip the spline section and pull hard, it will release the circlip on the gearbox O/P shaft/spline, and then you can withdraw the shaft from the swingarm. Removing the swingarm to check the O/P shaft itself is a matter of removing the footpeg sideplates and on the LHS you undo the pivot locknut and unscrew the pivot bolt, on the RHS, undo the three allen screws and remove the fixed pivot. Pull on the swingarm to release the rubber boot.....................simple.
The above should tell where the problem lies.

Bill.......................;-)

Thanks lads

I asked him and this is the reply:

"It's ther later problem, the wheel spins but there is a grinding sound from swingarm when put in gear, with no power to wheel.
When I put my hand on swingarm and turn the rear wheel the grindiing feels like it's in there, towards the front."

So i think he means grinding towards the front of the driveshaft
