« on: November 12, 2007, 09:38:56 PM »
I'd like to upgrade my 1979 R65 to electronic ignition. I would like brand preference as well as installation advice. All help much appreciated. Thanks Ray

Hi Raygun,

Omega Ignition.  It is a German ignition that fits of the front of the Bosch Alternator.  The sensor bolts on the front of the crank and not the cam shaft.  Original Bean can remains an can be used as a back up.  Super stable.  Advance curves are computer generated and adjustable. For that year you need Type "W" i think -same as I have on my 1980.

If you still have the old coils that is OK but you have to stradle both coils with the wires from the Omega to get both cylinders to fire.  When you get there you will understand what I mean.

I have since upgraded my coils to a single Dyna with two wires out.  Works great.

Call me if you have any questions.  770-414-5642.

Here is the North American Distributer:

Stephen is quite helpful.

Thanks Gumby, I've been looking at the Omega. If I have any questions I'll call. Not sure if it would be worth the expense. What is your thoughts?

Ignition upgrades have been almost as hotly debated on other forums as oil, tyres and redheads. One advantage to the stock points system is the ease of repair on the road. Spares are easily carried on the bike and cheap! That said, I have been hypnotized by the elegance of the Omega system and one of its pluses is that you can leave the major components of the points system in place as a backup! If I weren't so cheap I'd have one already.

Its a major expense but the signal it delivers is rock solid as opposed to the jumping around I saw under the timing light of the old points...

still your choice though...

I doubt that one could "upgrade?" to the stock electronic ignition using used parts (forget about new) for much less than the Omega - and it would be a used ignition.
