Valve cover studs
« on: April 16, 2017, 05:45:01 PM »
Apparently my valve cover studs (actually the center nuts) were cross threaded by a previous owner. I removed the studs and was planning on cleaning the threads... Any thoughts on the best way to secure them back into the head?

Either Heli-Coil or Time-Sert if there is any doubt about the integrity of the threads in the head.  Seems I remember reading (a long time ago) that some folks used a longer stud with a "jamb nut" on the back side.

The original studs are a little too short to engage all of the threads in the head which is why there are so many problems with threads stripping. A longer stud is a good idea which ever solution is adopted.

I dont think his studs pulled out
I think he is saying they are damaged because the Acorn nuts were cross threaded
He wants to know how to retain the new studs in head

Exactly! But got it done this morning. Tap and Die M8x1.25... one stud was ruined... the other cleaned up fine. Used thread lock and put it back in. Then got grade 8 m8x1.25 rod...cut it...cleaned it up and pit that in slightly longer than other... threadlocked...rechecked valves and put it all back together. Bike is coming along nicely!! I am a fuel tank and seat/subframe away from getting it on the road. If anyone wants to loan me an r65 tank... that would he super. Lol.
