That is freakin' bizzare!  Is it possible that the "solid" one has something stuffed in there that has kinda welded together with carbonm, heat, rust, etc?

Neat! I'm sure you have run across defective hardware in the past ie screws without threads or a slot machined in them. I just wonder if you have a fitting that was never drilled from the factory! Very odd indeed!

Yeah, I thought it was weird, too.  I scratched thru the thin coating of carbon, and sure enough, it's solid!

I was surprised how easily they came out, and how easily the exhaust nuts came off.  I used a propane torch to heat the nuts up a little, and they spun off with no binding or galling at all.  I used just enough heat until the intake side of the head felt barely warm to the touch.
