Removing starter motor

I'm sure someone has some wisdom about this....
I am removing the starter motor for an overhaul, and I have removed one allen bolt holding the right side of the starter. The one on the left however.....! How on earth do you get a socket onto the bolt, given the proximity of the casing? Even the allen bolt end is a challenge. It is of course, achievable....but how??!  :-/

It's been about 9 years since I removed a starter , I think I placed a flat blade screwdriver in there to prevent the bolt from turning.

I've done a number of these over the years but I can't visualise the problem you are having. A photo might help.

All I can say is that BMW cunningly designed the STANDARD system so you can just get necessary tools onto various things, if a PO has changed the bolting, you mayy be in a world of hurt.
