I need a different sound????
« on: March 27, 2016, 06:34:57 AM »
Greetings, Happy Easter to all.
My 82 R65 has turned into a real joy to ride. My original intent was to make some modifications to the appearance of the bike, but the look has grown on me.
Here's the deal, I am not a Harley dirt bag type rider, that claim that loud pipes, saves lives. However, I just finished building my 68 Bonneville engine, and got her running this weekend. The exhaust on the Bonneville is British stock, and the sound is to die for.
I realized, I need to change the sound of my R65. I am open to some suggestions for a good throaty sound, that won't require major changes to install.
Thanks for all replies,

Since you enjoy the exhaust notes from the Bonneville, you'd probably be fond of a Norton fitted with OEM Peashooter muffs. Roarty when desired but not enough to piss off your neighbors... too much.

Both my 1981 and 1983 R65s sing through repop Peashooters. The '81 has NLA EPCO stainless muffs while the '83 (pictured) wears EMGO repops as pictured. The EMGOs are good quality Chinese products and available at decent prices. They are also quick bolt-ons as the muffler's mounting tabs are a direct fit to the rear sub-frame. Search Amazon and eBay. Mine came from a Florida vendor.

Montmil, thanks for the reply. Those aren't peashooters. Pinky, below, has peashooters, Those are reverse cone type from the 71 and later Triumphs and Nortons, but hey, they look right on your R65. Those are quieter than what is on Pinky, but they do have a nice low tight sound on the British 750 and 850's. Thanks

I just did an image search and it looks like the term "pea shooter" is used for both styles.

In the mixed up world of right foot shifter British motorcycles, we call them peashooters and reverse cone. I like both of them. The reverse cones are quieter and seem to balance out the look when turn signals became required. I built a 73 T140V with reverse cones/peashooters which made the noise of the engine more pronounced. I was always wondering if there was a rod knocking or something coming apart in the engine. The louder peashooters sort mask the excessive engine/valve noise of those engines. I think the reverse cone peashooters would be a good compliment to this 650 BMW engine, I may try a set of them. Thanks for the replies.

If you like just a bit louder than stock, but still mellow, the MAC mufflers are nice sounding.

As a true blue Australian, I can't go past Staintunes.  Bit louder than stock, an excellent note.

I am constantly being told how great my Staintunes sound by guys who follow me.... I will try to swap bikes for a while with the next one who says that as I would like a chance to hear them in action some time!

I know this is an older thread but what's wrong with punching out the baffle in the stock muffler? Its still only going to be less than a 1 inch opening so shouldn't be too obnoxious to the neighbors but deeper and gutsier when on cam.
I have done that on Harleys, Hondas, and other brands & I think I'm getting ready to do that to my R65.
Anyone see a problem with that on this bike, any adverse effects?

That Pinky is a sharp looking bike - congratulations on winning the trophy!  A friend of mine used to have a 1968 Trident with that same paint scheme.

Staintune pipes. Fantastic reputation but 1,400 Australian dollars, not so cheap.

That's right on the border line of prohibitive....... I was always a buyer in the 6-750USD range, and almost pulled the trigger once, but at over a 1000USD that's in most cases 1/3 the worth of the bike.

I've seen several R65's for sale with Stainless exhaust over the years. That might be a buying que for me when I jump back in

OMG....Just checked their site and that 1400AUD was just the mufflers! Add 600 more for the headers. Now it's more than 1/2 the price of the bike. It would have to sleep with me for that price   ;)

The best is never cheap

For those of us on the lefthand side of the world, Keihan might be cheaper than Staintune.  I got a pair of mufflers a couple years ago and they've been great, although they're yellowing a bit now.  Of course I haven't cleaned the bike since the install, either, so that could be dirt too!  Not to mention they're sold in pounds, so if you're dollar denominated it could be an even better deal.

http://www.keihan.co.uk/catalogue.html
'04 R1150 RT ~41000 miles
'86 R65 / '84 motor ~72000 miles. SS lines, Spiegler rotor, Progressive monoshock, Keihan silencers, a piece of Pichler fairing.
'76 CB400F ~26000 miles. non-runner!

Stainless will yellow a bit with prolonged heat but the yellow can easily be buffed off...
