Hey thanks for the good tips and observations nhmaf.  I'd forgotten this 'till you mentioned it, but I was forking amused after being careful not to drop the conrods that guy had beaten me to it and left a conrod nick already, another goodie.

not to actually put any sealant around the outer edges of the studs

I'll try that as I went just around the outside of the studs the first time, cheers. It didn't squeeze outside the barrel, but I can see it'd be better sealing on the inside.

...With a model that uses a cylinder base o-ring, I'd skip that part and just be sure to lube the o-ring with a bit of engine oil before putting it in its groove...

Both Airhead Gurus Oak Okleshen and Bob 'Snowbum' Fletcher, when queried about using a sealant along with the large base o-ring agree, "It can't hurt."

As noted, do not over-do it and squeeze sealant into the top cylinder stud oil passages.

Both my R65s have the large o-ring and also get a thin smear of YamaBond. The R100S does not have the machined grooves for an o-ring so the sealant is mandatory.

It turned out the oil leak was from pinching the forward top stud o-ring on my first top end assemble.  Maybe I oiled them too early or knocked it out of place while pushing the cylinder home. Anyway, 800km into my second assemble to fit the recond. heads and no leaks yet.  I ended up using hylomar for the cylinder base sealant again as I already had some.

Hylomar is good stuff. You're fortunate to have some of that often hard to find, pricey sealant.  [smiley=thumbup.gif]
