Help with ignition switch positions
« on: September 03, 2016, 01:06:39 AM »
I have an ignition switch from a 1982 R65LS with no indication of what the various switch positions are except a faded memory of times past and the ring that used to sit around the switch  which is equally as faded as my memory.

I'm think that there a 5 positions, with the central one being the OFF position. Can anyone confirm that the following sequence is correct? (from left to right):
AUX - PARK LIGHTS - OFF - Ignition ON - Ignition ON WITH HEADLIGHT

Thanks

I can't guarantee that mine is wired "stock" but mine is:

Off
Parking lights front and rear
Ignition - no lights
Ignition -  headlight and tail lights.

if you are wiring stock there are some excellent pictures elsewhere on this forum. I have them downloaded and can email them on Tuesday when I get home if all else fails.

For what it is worth I feel your pain. Coming up 2 years ago I left a K100RS I'd just bought at my parents place as I was too sick with the flu to ride it 1,100 km home. I left it intending to pick it up in a month or so. That didn't happen and by Christmas last even with a new battery it wouldn't go. I am at my Father's place this weekend to decide whether to try and ride it North in a month's time, ship it or sell to a wrecker. The good news is that with a new battery, fuel pump and fuel rail pressure sensor it is running beautifully. Tomorrow I'll change all fluids and take the wheels off. Monday I'll buy it new tyres and brake pads and hook it up to a battery tender. Hopefully when I come back down for a conference shortly I will be able to jump on and ride it home.

Similar to Tony but mine is:

Off
Front Parking light and tail light
Ignition - no lights
Ignition - with front parking light and tail light
Ignition -  headlight + parking light and tail light.

Note the parking light remains on even when the headlight is on which is a bit of an issue for me as I normally ride in position 4 with a 20W halogen bulb in place of the stock 4W parking light. That means I'm pulling nearly 2 amps more than necessary when I do switch the headlight on.

I learnt early through experience of an almost flat battery that the key can be removed in position 1 leaving the parking lights on.

You should be able to test the switch using the diagram below.

Barry is correct for an European bike.
I may ask that the first parking light position (ignition OFF) can be set back to OFF with any key apt to enter the lock. This way, a fellow BMW owner can turn YOUR parking light off if he finds you've forgotten to do so.
I wonder if one can turn parking lights ON with the "wrong key" ?
P.S. the 5 position ignition switch is NLA ... So treat yours with respect and care...
