It can be repaired, sounds like the ' Bendix ' is stuck and the starter gear is not being pushed out to contact the flywheel .

There is a thread in the R65 FAQ section that shows how to disassemble a Bosch starter and lubricate it .

Thanks for the insight guys...I have one last question regarding the battery...could a less than fully charged battery stop the solenoid from properly engaging the starter to turn over the engine? Seems to me that when I have the battery fully charged it kicks right over? I'm thinking to replace the battery before digging into the expense and effort of the starter.

Thanks again...

Yes.............invest in a battery tender before you replace the battery it will kept it topped up and you may find that you don't need to replace the battery, they are not expensive $20 on flebay.

How old is the battery ???
If you decide to replace the battery, go with an AGM type battery, generic AGM batteries are quite reasonably priced .

Not sure of the battery age...I bought the bike from someone last year. Everything has been fine...rode all last summer and put it on a tender for winter storage. It turns and starts intermittently which has me confused as to which is the problem...battery or starter. :-/

Put a volt meter on the battery during cranking when it isn't wanting to turn over if it goes below about 9 volts you more than likely have a weak battery or possibly a draging starter.
If you have a standard wet flooded battery I would get rid of it and buy an AGM.

AGM batteries normally  do not need a tender
