Starter Motor
« on: April 24, 2016, 02:21:48 AM »
hello again - finally I'm back to working on the bike rebuild - I built a workbench in my kitchen :-) The forks are now fully serviced and reassembled. I'm servicing the starter motor and cleaning it up. the interior is filthy and covered in what looks like years of old grease and dirt/dust. I've wiped off most of the crap but would like to properly remove the residue that is left - I have read that Isopropyl Alcohol is okay to use as it won't affect the wiring and laminate. Can anyone confirm this for me please? If not does anyone have a recommendation for cleaning everything. The outside parts of course have come up nicely using Mineral Turps - my favourite degreaser for smaller parts.

I have just read that some guys use a mild degreaser on the unit then rinse and dry thoroughly either by putting it in an oven on about 100 Celsius or spraying liberally with WD40 and wiping off the excess. So another possibility.

To be honest Adrian I would not get too excited about cleaning the windings with anything stronger than compressed air.

By all means clean and lubricate the bendix, bearings/bushes etc, fit new brushes if needed and clean the brush holders, but I really would leave the coil windings well alone. A but of crud isn't going to affect their operation one bit and nobody but you will ever know.

Thanks Tony - I have managed to remove almost all the crud using a cloth and then some cotton buds so I think that will have to do - I have a full service kit and a new solenoid so it'll be fine I'm sure - I'm going to get a local Auto Electrician to remove and replace the two bushes - which are soaking in oil at the moment  ;)
