1979 R65 center stand
« on: March 24, 2016, 12:48:48 AM »
Hello,
I live in New Mexico and just got my first bike a 1979 R65. It is running well but the previous owner had some funky work done and replaced some parts with non factory stuff so I'm slowly getting to know the bike and getting it back to the way it should be. I had a major service, carb work, new rear tire etc done by Marc Bayer at OCD in Santa Fe. I lost the bogus fairing, have ordered the correct headlight assembly, and have an exhaust on the way from Larry in Texas. My next thing to address is the center stand. From what I have read so far it sounds like mine had worn or may even be the wrong one. Instead of welding some bead on the contact points as recommended someone welded some extra material on the bottom where the stand contacts the ground. I would like to replace the stand with a correct and good one. My understanding is there may be two versions of the stand one for 79-80 and one for 81-84. Does anyone know if the later stands will work on my 79.
Thank you in advance for the advice and I'm glad I have found this forum and will be asking lots of questions in the coming months.
This is my first post and I will attempt to attach a photo as well.
Raphael

Hi Joe,
I look forward to sharing photos. Do you know if the 81-84 center stand will work on my bike?
Thanks,
Raphael

Hi raphski !!!
Welcome to the forum !!!
The '79-81 model year bikes had a different center stand than the '82 and later twin shock bikes .
It was a lousy center stand, that's probably why you have an aftermarket stand on your bike .
The later version center stand, needs a small piece of angle iron welded to the frame and a rubber bump stop installed for it to rest in the up position .
The original OEM stand for the earlier bikes, used rubber plugs in the end of the center stand tubing as the up stop, they contacted the frame tube .

'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

You may be able to use the Kick starter bumper as I did instead having to weld a bumper to the frame

When my center stand was in the up position it would hit the clutch release lever where the cable connects to it

Thanks for the advice!
I have a new style stand on the way and will use the bumper stop to make it work. If I need to weld a stop I can do that as well. I have a talented metal worker friend that lives near by.
