Exhaust recomendation R45
« on: January 16, 2016, 02:19:35 PM »
Hi
I have 1981 R45. After being knocked of on a roundabout the exhausts need replacing. The downpies broke (Rusted Through). I bought a pair of cheap reverse cone megatons.  Welded the reduces to the downpipes and wrapped the downpipes to make it look a bit more presentable. However, the Megatons are too loud. I have removed baffles and packed but not much difference.
Can anyone recommend a pair of silencers that would be a bit more throaty than originals but not too loud. I may just have to bite the bullet and get pattern downpipes and pattern original silencers, but it would be nice to have something a little different and more fitting with the high bars, knobblies . many thanks

What sort of a budget do you have?   There are a number of possibilities here in the the states - some of which could be made more pricey to ship over to you.
One set of options might be the MAC Exhaust mufflers and they make header pipes too -

These are among the lesser priced options - not as high quality (or price) as Staintune or Keihen products.

Hello !
If you plan on keeping the bike, Keihan is the way to go. Their silencers and headers are top notch and warranted for 10 years.
I've got my set in 95 ...  and still going strong. It's an investment though.

Thanks for the replies. Looking through the option here in the UK a set of chrome Sito replacements with downpipes is £438 and a Keihan system is £548. I don't plan on keeping the bike indefinatly but might as well bite the bullet and get a keihan system, at least they will last and add to any resale value. Buying the cheap aftermaket Megatons was a mistake. Not only too loud but seriously effected performance, which there is not that much to start with on the R45. Thank you for your advice and recomendations.

My R45 had original BMW silencers when I got it but one of them started to get paper thin after a couple of years. I replaced them with a pair of barely used Sito silencers off ebay for £70. I'm still on the original pipes so far.

For the first few years I used to swap in the old original silencers  during the winter and noticed no difference in performance compared to the sito's.

Having experienced the original very quiet silencers I was disappointed with the Sito's being too loud so I fitted some small additional baffles that took the edge off. I think it would be hard for a silencer to be too restrictive on on an R45 and again the extra baffles made no perceptible difference to performance. After 7 years they have carboned up and quietened down nicely.  Before I fitted the Sito's I filled them with waxoyl and then drained it off to try and make them last.

At £438 for a new chrome system Then a stainless system for a bit more seems a no brainer to me if you are in it for the long term. You could also consider a 2nd hand stainless system and polish them up as good as new or perhaps a 2nd hand set of pipes and new silencers as pipes are easier to find 2nd hand without dints.

Thanks Barry. I will go for the stainless system. It's kept outside, used all year round for work and pleasure. Not the best looker but one of the few bikes i have had that i can totaly depend on, and easily maintain.
Been outside this morning in the snow and made a couple of baffles for the Megaton's using the old original cut down end caps and tubing.  Still very loud but acceptable for now, until i get the funds for a new system

This morning, my rusty right silencer finally fractured close to the clamp. Rang up Motorworks who had a good selection of used Keihans for about two thirds the price of new. My R65 outfit stays outdoors and is used in all weathers, too, so I was keen to go stainless. I think the parts are the same on 45/65s.

See my recent thread "shiny new go fast parts" for a few photos of new Keihan silencers.  I've put a few miles on since then, the sound is very acceptable to me.  I wanted something not louder than stock, although these do sound a little growly-er.  They also look very nice!
'04 R1150 RT ~41000 miles
'86 R65 / '84 motor ~72000 miles. SS lines, Spiegler rotor, Progressive monoshock, Keihan silencers, a piece of Pichler fairing.
'76 CB400F ~26000 miles. non-runner!
