Turn Signal warnig beeper
« on: January 19, 2016, 08:57:41 PM »
If anyone was wondering about a Signal warning beeper.
Here is the  schematic for one I built. (I have a bad habit of not turning it off)
It is based off of the BMW one that was on the early R65.
Pulling the clutch in or putting it in Neutral will silence the beeper even if the turn signal is on.
Unlike the OEM one mine has a 15 second release delay on the silencing relay.
Meaning it wont start beeping until  15 seconds after I have last let  the clutch out. That should give me enough time to complete the turn and get the signal turned off.
So I should only have to listen to it while changing lanes on the freeway. I seldom ride on the freeway so it shouldn't be an issue.
I haven't had a chance to ride with it yet because of bad weather  (below 0 C or snowing). So I may have to adjust the time delay.
It will not beep when the Hazards are on.
If anyone is interested in building one let me know and I can elaborate on the parts.
The delay feature can be added to the early R65

The lower schematic is the simple one without the delay.
Meaning it will beep any time they are on and the bike is in gear without the clutch pulled in.

Could the resistor in the delay circuit be replaced by a pot so that the time delay could be adjusted.  Besides reminding me to turn the indicator off I find the beeper very useful for warning pedestrians that I'm coming up behind them and turning into the side road that they are about to walk across without looking. A long time delay would defeat that.

I find the beeper a good safety feature if the volume and tone can be made something less than annoying. I've had a beeper on 2 bikes a 76 Z900 and 79 R45. Both were much too loud as stock and had to be muffled. A dab of RTV silicone on the diaphragm toned down the Z900 and a neatly applied circular piece of duct tape cured the R45.

I wouldn't be without it on the R45 especially as its such a cleverly thought out circuit.  I doubt that other bikes of the era with a warning beeper have the clutch and neutral defeats built in.

Yes the 3.3K resistor can be a pot.
I actually had one in there to test it.
All the parts in the circuit are very small.
The 10 ohm resistor is just in there to prevent arcing in your neutral and clutch switch. It has no affect on the time release.
If I had any room left in the relay bank I would build one in  the shape of a relay by just incapacitating it in epoxy and plug it into a relay socket and have a small pot on top to adjust it.
I currently just have it all raped up around the capacitor in the harness.
Hella does make a time release relay but it has a common input for the release circuit and contacts it has to be separate.
BMW's peeper does have rectifier in front of it.
I couldn't find one like theirs that wasn't  polar sensitive

Was able to do some test rides with this set up this weekend and found out a few things
With the beeper mounted under the fuel tank  I can just barely  hear it when at highway speed.
So I moved it to behind the battery cover and it is even worse.
So I moved it to up under the dash pointing back at me and I can just hear it. Now to make a bracket for it.
Second thing the 13 to 15 second delay may be a little to long.
I think i will change it to about 7 to 10seconds
I also found a AC/DC peeper at the local electronics parts store
so I can get rid of the H-Bridge if it is a least as loud as the one I  have now.
If you have wondered what fits in all that extra space under the tank
Well here is a picture of it full.
I have a total of 8 relays and 8 fuses.
There is 2 of the thin Panasonic relays.
One is under the dash and another under the Ignition coil.
The peeper was just temporarily mounted with clamp and bolt.

The original beeper location was on the left front down tube just barely hidden by the lower edge of the tank. It was mounted on a simple tab bracket that the rubber housing of the beeper slide onto.

I found Beeper volume to be a compromise between annoyingly loud about town and still audible at highway speeds.

That looks slick and complicated enough to have been designed by a German BMW Engineer!  ;)  I went a bit simpler on mine with just two steering diodes (1n914) and a 12v buzzer.  But your neutral/clutch cutout makes this approach rather attractive.
