Breather issues
« on: November 29, 2015, 02:24:33 AM »
Hi, just wondering how much oil "blow off" there actually is through the breather pipe of a stock R65? I'm looking at putting mine back together (1982 R65LS currently very much disassembled) minus the airbox and use pod filters on the carbs. I'm really in the planning stage for reassembly right now and wondering how to terminate the breather pipe that previously dumped into the airbox. The amount of oil it may blow off is a vital piece of information and will decide whether I need a can to catch it all or just what is basically a bolt with a hollow head with foam/gauze receptacle in the end.
All/any advice would greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

I ran an open breather with a gauze filter for 25,000km, and nothing came out. Now I run the tube straight into the right intake snorkel....but i use a K&N filter so any oil on the filter is no problem.

Thanks Motu. I imagine a little more oil on the filter may actually be a tiny advantage. I had no idea whether I would be dealing with great gobs of oil or not much at all. Your experience confirms my suspicion i.e. not much coming out the end of that breather pipe. Any other info from anyone?

If you fill the oil to the full mark it will blow more oil.  These engines seem to be happy at the halfway point on the dipstick.

Oil on a foam filter is ok, but it will keep a paper filter from passing air.

Thanks Luca. Not looking at using a paper filter so all OK there.
