Bing carb numbers
« on: November 18, 2015, 02:39:25 AM »
Hi all,

Great to be back on this fantastic forum. Just wondering if anyone has a bit of a handle on the R65 Bings. Am I right in thinking the R65 and R80 shared the same carbs?  My July 1985 R65 dual shock has carb numbers;
Left side: 64/32/353
Right side: 64/32/348,

Which seem to be closer to R80 numbers by the Clymer literature.  I'm looking to rebuild them soon and wondering if all the 32mm carbs use the same parts?  I'm unsure if the bike's carbs are the original ones but the numbers seem to correlate to the correct year or two. I tried to look at bingpower.com but it's 'under construction'.  Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,
Dan

The non consecutive numbers suggest at least one of those carbs is not the original. According to Bingpower.de The 348 is an R65 carb and the 353 is an R80 carb. that might not matter if the specs are the same.  In any case the replaceable service items should all be the same.

Bingpower.de worked for me to check the specs:

I've got a Bing manual and except for the main jets, all the parts are the same for both carbs .
It shows a 138 main or the -348 and 135 for the -353 .
Just make sure both main jets are the same .
My '81 R65 came with 145 main jets and I put 138's from my spares from one of the LS's I have .
I've seen no difference in engine performance, or fuel consumption with the smaller jets installed .
If by chance you can't get the numbers from the Bing site, here's what I found in the manual .
Main jet, whatever you decide on, needle jet 2.64, jet needle 251, atomizer 591, idle jet 45 .
If you replace the jet needle, that's needle that is installed in the slide, the position of the needle is 3, that's numbered from the top .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
