plastic vs foam rectangle air filters?

This is my first R65. It is a 1980 with the rectangular air filter.

I have a brand new air filter and the old one. Both have the same part numbers.
The old one is foam/rubber.
The new one has plastic surrounding it.
The new one does not fit properly into the bottom, or top section of the air filter 'sandwich' parts.
The plastic is too big and it leaves gaps at the bottom near the 4 clips.
Max's fiche shows the new kind with the plastic.

Is this a known issue and is there a solution?

I wish I kept the old one in better shape before my son poured dirt all over it and let it sit in the rain...

I've mentioned this a few times over the years here, but no one else seems to believe me .

You need to trim the plastic on the new filter housing around where the metal clips are, to get it to sit down and seat properly on the airbox .

I noticed this when the airfilters with the plastic housing came out, about 25-30 years ago .

I realized that the sand-cast metal airboxes are a different footprint then the plastic airbox.

I think going to the plastic airbox will solve the problem and should fit the newer style plastic air filter better?   Hopefully...

This is a problem I never knew existed until a year ago when my R65 hit the road with its flash square (alloy) airbox.

The "Reisen" brand filters sold by Motobins are foam not hard plastic
