Paint Colours & Plan
« on: September 24, 2007, 08:02:49 AM »
I have a '79 R65 which is painted a combination of red and black.  For example the gas tank is red on the sides and fades into black on top.  I believe this is close to the original paint scheme of this bike.  The front fender is a brown colour which I think comes about because the fender was either replaced or repainted at some time.  There is also pinstriping on the tank and on the side panels.

I have collector plates for this bike and want to keep it that way so that when I repaint it I will keep the original paint scheme and colours.

Can anyone tell me where I might find the original paint codes/colours for this bike and a plan that shows how it is painted with the various colours and the pinstriping.

I don't think a "fade" job was ever standard on any R65.  Check out http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/index.htm for the paint schemes, there should be a sticker on top of the rear fender (and under tank if it hasn't been repainted) with the paint code number.

Thanks Justin.  That's a good site.  I'll check the rear fender.  The tank has been repainted (but I'll check it too).  I suspect it was originally canyon red.  Do you know who sells these paints?

You can get them mixed from the code in Spies-Hecker (DuPont) or Glasurit (BASF).
