Re-sleeving under-tank master cylinders

Not R65 specific, but many forum members, as do I, have other Airheads in their garages.

With the current price for a new master cylinder hovering around $400.00, this service -with offered options- could permit a bit more than just beans n' rice for next week's meals.

While I am a fan of re-sleeving when I checked the cost of that service plus the new piston was more than what buying a new MS from MotoBins in the UK

Complete new master cylinders are ~$193 plus shipping.

I purchased my last one from them, and had delivery to the west-coast in three days

How long ago? The Master cylinder Monty is talking about is P/N 23710 and is listed at GBP260, which is somewhere North of $500 Australian Pesos. It was a while ago, but IO seem to recalll the piston and seal kit being around $AU50 and re-sleeving being about $AU100

Hey Tony, G'day from another Cairns (very new) forum member. I just looked on the Motobins site and they are advertised for about GBP160 (about $300 Australian) Wonder what shipping would be? Reputable BMW dealer in Perth has them listed for $400. I'm looking because I need one. Tried a reconditioning kit some time back and it failed badly, so I'm up for the big $$ by the look of it as part of a custom restoration.

Hello fellow Cairns resident.

I must clear some misconceptions.

The "reputable' dealer in Perth has a reputation only for charging the highest possible prices the market will bear and for loading freight in order to obtain even more profit.

Motobins will supply you most parts price and post for less than the "reputable" dealer will sell you the part.

A couple of people have had negative experiences with re-sleeving master cylinders - that is the fault of the machinist. It isn't rocket science, just a reasonable interference fit and either ream or hone to size. Brake Cylinder Reconditioning have done all of mine since I moved to Cairns in 1990 and I've never had one fail.

Lastly, pictures - the inmates here love pictures

Thanks for that. My inexperience with BMWs is obvious and there are a couple of very good tips there, probably learned from your experience.

Photos? I tried to post a couple and I don't think it worked - maybe too big. I'll resize and try again.
