Ticking speedo?

You can remove the speedometer drive cable from the transmission and put it in the chuck of a reversible drill motor and rotate the cable .

See if you can duplicate the noise that way .

I admit I haven't greased my R65 speedo cable in some time.   I do grease my Kawasaki speedo cable each year (it gets more miles put on it) and that can slide out from one end, anyway.    It was also heavily greased rom the factor when I bought it new (original cable broke).

I think with the airhead cables that some success can be had with a rubber tipped grease gun, like what is used for swing arm bearing lube, pulling the swaged end out a bit and jamming the rubber tip down into the opening.    I'm not sure now... I suppose this will be the year to figure that out!

Thanks to you all for the advice.  At present I am rushing to paint and varnish my little yacht sat on the drive before the lovely weather fades, but I did disconnected the cable and there was no click when I moved the bike; suggesting speedo head. I lubricated the cable with some engine oil but it did not seem too bad anyway. However, I will ride it before making a final diagnosis as the click may have gone as the bike cooled down (?) If I need the services of one, can one of the UK members recommend a speedo repairer who does BMW stuff?  Thanks again.

The members that grease the speedometer drive cable, how do you get the cable out of the outer sheath ??

All three of my R65's have swaged brass keepers that prevent the cable from coming out .

Suffice it to say, you are doing it wrong.

If we call the end of the cable that goes into the speedo "top" then you pull the cable out from the top.

Dunno what is in the RS - never had it out, The R65/80 and R65 both have recent Motobins Repops and they come out as described above. I also have a very noisy Ex-1979 R65/80 cable sittting on a shelf, genuine BMW and it comes out form the top.

In fact thinking about it, I reckon this is like the two Irishmen building a barn. Paddy notices that Mick is throwing half the nails away and asks why.
