I admit I haven't greased my R65 speedo cable in some time. I do grease my Kawasaki speedo cable each year (it gets more miles put on it) and that can slide out from one end, anyway. It was also heavily greased rom the factor when I bought it new (original cable broke).
I think with the airhead cables that some success can be had with a rubber tipped grease gun, like what is used for swing arm bearing lube, pulling the swaged end out a bit and jamming the rubber tip down into the opening. I'm not sure now... I suppose this will be the year to figure that out!
