clutch cable length and routing
« on: March 02, 2015, 01:21:08 PM »
so the strip down and rebuild has begun...

firstly the current clutch cable on my 1980 R65 is stretched to the point of non function so a replacement is due can anybody advise on the length that the original cable should be as i am having one made up off the stretched sample.

also i have a feeling the routing of the cable isn't correct so some advice on the routing of the cable would be fantastic.

thanks

Clutch cable length will be determined by the style handlebars mounted- either the low Euro bars or the dealer-installed 'western' bars favored by many NA buyers. What style bars do you have?

As to routing, the clutch cable runs down the front downtube on the right-side of the chassis. At the lower bend on the frame, a zip tie is used to secure the cable. Not overly tight.

Part #32 73 1237694 is for the 1495mm length clutch cable. Easy to confirm the correct part after you determine what handlebars are mounted. If unsure, a quick call to Bob's BMW will get you squared away.      Or your local SA dealer.

I would also suggest you confirm the correct position of the clutch lever located at the aft end of the transmission. I kinda doubt a BMW braided cable could stretch to the point of being unusable before it broke. Also, confirm the cable's required barrel is still installed in the clutch lever. Without the barrel, the length will possibly trick you. A forum member just recently discovered his bike was laking this vital, little part.

Report back with your findings.

thank you for the info. From what i can tell the bars on my bike are the lower euro bars

as for the routing i was wondering more on how the cable is routed through the dash and forks as the routing i had on the previous cable seemed very tight and congested

thanks again

If that's the case, then you had the correct cable routing. Before removing the steam gauges and cluster housing for a digital gauge, I was always bummed about the cables bending the plastic housing and their 'bendy' routing. After dumping the pod, cables are much happier, as am I.

Pics may be helpful.

i have found a guy that makes up cables for bikes cars and other misc things, he has a good reputation for cables with may of the guys i know with other classic's so i figure i would give him a try him his prices are very reasonable so it won't be a huge loss financially if they turn out to be s**t.
