What tank bag are you using on your R65
« on: November 14, 2014, 08:05:18 PM »
Wanting to get a tank bag I was wondering what others are using.
I don't want something that will  wear the paint off
I prefer something not made in China.

I'll advise against a magnetic Cortech 18 liter tank bag.  I have one.  It's a nice bag, but even when spotlessly clean the crosshatched rubber underside wears into the paint.

I've been using the same bargain-priced Fastrax magnetic tank bag on the Airheads and the Triumph Trophy for several years. It has a rubber underside likely the same as Luca's but mine has never shown any wear patterns in any of the fuel tank's paint. I do keep the tanks waxed and the bottom of the tank bag clean.

Using a BiLT magnetic bag made in china. Works OK. I try to remember to place a piece of rubber shelf liner under the bag to protect the paint. The shelf liner is a very soft rubber that looks like a very open weave but it all one piece. I have seen it advertised for RVs to keep the dishes from sliding around and making noise but I found it in the home improvement store and the house ware department of department stores.

I picked up a GIVI at the Mid-Ohio swap meet about 8 years ago. It came with both a strap on (zipper removable) and magnetic hold on options, I have always used the magnetic, but I have never had a problem with it marring the paint on the tank. One of the zipper pulls came off this year and was creatively replaced with a piece of heavy gauge stainless wire (316). Otherwise it has held up very well. I am pretty sure this style is still available from GIVI.

I use an  older Marsee tank bag held on with straps. it works well but I tend to load it up quite a bit and it shifts to the left a bit. Good build quality and it has lasted well. Never seen any damage to the tank and I can't say I keep my bike real clean. Let us know what you pick and how it works out.

I have a second hand "Cargo Basics" branded bag, which is expandable to fit a 6 pack nicely.  Made in China.  It came to me with a broken zipper and a tear in the side.  After 15,000 miles,  It's only scratched my tank once when one of the magnets picked up a screw and I mounted it without knowing.

I can't find an American distributor for these.  The Amazon link below is the closest I've come.

decorn33, what are those tank knee pads from?  My Cortech magnetic tank bag never caused any problems and it's easy to use.  But my knees have rubbed all the way through paint and primer on the gas tank.

I use an LL Bean Book Bag. a couple of straps with Velcro around the frame tubes in front of the tank and through the shoulder straps on the pack, and a quick release buckle on the top handle strap of the pack to another strap between the seat and the tank and done. I have had a problem with the shoulder straps coming loose at the pack from overloading but I will have that repaired soon. The quick release on the rear allows for fueling. There may be a few new scratches on the tank but I did not notice any wear marks. I would post a picture but presently "Billy" is totaled. That will require another post.

I have the original BMW expandable bag I bought w/the bike in '86. Key is to keep a thick coat of wax on the tank to keep from scratching.

I've had good luck with the Dowco Rally Magnetic Tankbag.. It isn't huge, but it is expandable and holds what I want in there securely without slipping/scratching in over 5 years of use.   The top clear map pocket could be wider though, but that would also require the whole thing to be larger.

I have been able to use my new tank Bag a couple of times now and it really works well
I didn't get it to really keep anything in it
I wanted it to hold my GPS and and a map and it is great for that.
I am sure it will work well for holding stuff also.
I would post a picture of it but I cant figure out how to down load a picture directly to the forum. I know I have done it before so something must have changed
