Fairing or Windshield?
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:59:10 AM »
I am the new owner of a naked '79 R65.  I would like some wind protection.  What is recommended a part fairing (some look pretty sharp) or a windshield?

Also what brand/type of fairing or windshield is recommended and where can they be found?

BMW R90S and R100S quarter fairings look real good on the R65. You can get them used for about 150-200 bucks.......Dew.

I have a Memphis Shades windshield that came on my bike. Do not plan to use it.
I like the wind up to 90mph & after 90mph windshield just too squirrely handling wise. Not that my R65 would go over 90mph. Well maybe down a canyon @ full throttle. Hmmm, I wonder?
It has a scratch that is rather ugly but it is fine otherwise.
I thought of putting tint film on it, if I were to use it. Or even cutting/modifying & painting.
I rode very few miles with it & only in town. So can't say how good the protection is.
Was planning to eBay it for $ to buy seals & gaskets for my R65 workover this winter.
PM me if interested.

Thanks Tagordon. I've decided I'm going to look for a 1/4 fairing to put on as suggested by dewjantim.

I was never a fan of fairings, or windshields come to that, but having riden behind an RT barn door fairing for most of the this year I've found myself getting to like it. Although how much that liking has been down to the piss poor weather this summer I'll leave until I've got my naked Bimbo back on the road!

Cross, keep in mind that while real R90/R100S fairings are expensive and hard to find, there are aftermarket  S-type fairings galore available from many parts houses and on Ebay, usually for less than 50 bucks. Here's just a couple of samples from a search on "cafe fairing":

They're also very simple to mount, using 2 U-shaped brackets to attach to the headlight mounting bolts.
Good luck   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
