Swing arm to gearbox seal
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:02:13 PM »
I'm in the final stages of my build and will hopefully have the thing finished in the next week or two, but I have a couple of problems which are causing me frustration at the moment.

One of these is the rubber boot which fits the gearbox and swing arm. I bought a couple of the jubilee type clamps from motobins for the new rubber boot I have but just can't get the swing arm end to go around enough to tighten it up which means it is weaping oil a little at the moment.

Does anyone know where I could get one in a larger size? I tried a jubilee clip but they are just to bulky to go around this fairly tight area.

Cheers
James

From my experience, you need the OEM clamps for this installation, I've seen other clamps used, but they usually leak or drip .

For practical purposes you are correct. I have tried using metal cable ties and was successful, but you do need a special tool to tension them correctly, the ties are cheap, the tool is not.

The correct part is best as it can be removed by the side of the road if need be (didn't torque the coupler bolts correctly)

James I had the same problem during the assembly of my 81 R65, and standard strap.  I found the strap to be the correct size but the screw to be only a few mm's short of capturing the threaded clasp.  I found a longer screw at the local hardware store that solved the problem and a lot of frustration.

I can't remember the exact size of the replaced screw at the moment but that may be an option for you as well.

Yeah it is so frustrating.
So close to being screwed in but just not quite long enough.

I have ordered a slightly larger version at 94mm instead of the 83mm to see if that works better, but if this doesn't work then I will get a larger screw.

"So close to being screwed in but just not quite long enough."   So many funny replies could be made but I'm goona let this one go. Too easy. ;D

There's also a "right side up" to the boot install.

Haha. Think I might have been half asleep when I wrote that.

I installed it the right way as I was curious to see what the German > English translations were on the boot. :)

"Oben" = Top

James, be careful the new larger strap you ordered is sized correctly to adequately put a good squeeze on the circumference of the boot without bottoming out on itself.

If I remember correctly the original screw was only a matter of 2-3mm short of pay dirt.

Monte, I'm disappointed you let this one get away.

Hey, Mikey V!  Yeah, I'm talkin' at you, man.

So you wangled a pass to stop by and visit your ol' buddies still confined here in the R65 Asylum. Well, good on ya, ol' pal, ol' buddy.

Just watch out for Nurse Ratched. She's still on the prowl. And don't let the screen door hit ya on your arse on the way out. Next time, bring beer, 'kay?

Ahem, now back to the problem at hand....

I always found it helpful to use one of the spring air box clips to hook inside the rubber boot and pull it in place.  Up and down are critical and it's a real PITA but if it came off then it should go back on.
