Rebuilding ate calipers

So as one of the last jobs I need to do before getting the bike back on the road, I started to dismantle the callipers today.

I've got the ate versions on my 83 65ls, and had a little trouble with the pistons. Turns out using 2 bleed nipples and a bike pump gives you enough pressure to push the pistons out.

Once I got the out I realised that I need to replace these too along with the seals etc. I'm also going to get them vapour blasted the same as my forks, but it looks like there are only a couple of places listing the pistons.

They are pretty expensive to replace all 4 and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on where to look god replacements other than motobins and motorworks.

Also when figuring out which size pistons they are is it the diameter of them? If so mine are the 36mm I think.

You don't have many options for replacement pistons for the ATE calipers .

The pistons are 36 mm in diameter for the ATE calipers .

If the pistons prove to be too costly to replace, Brembo calipers  from an R65 will work and the replacement parts are available and less costly than ATE parts .

Rebuilding the ATE calipers on my '81 R65 is a job I am going to do when the weather cools down in 2 months here in the suburb of hell, I call home .

I've got a set of Brembo calipers off of my parts bike, '84 LS, I'm going to disassemble both sets and see if the Brembo pistons will work in an ATE caliper, I know the dust covers on the pistons are different between the two different calipers, so I don't know if they will work  or not .

I do not know anybody who has given feedback on these but the diameter is right so they should be fine. And they are stainless steel compared to rusty NOT trusty Ate originals which were chromed.

They are a cheap alternative and you should try them out. Much, much cheaper than alternative offers. I went for Motorworks offer and it took 1,5 months to get them plus constant calling them and asking why nothing is getting done. The most troublesome parts to get in my experience.

I ended up ordering some of these pistons at about half the price of those from sources here in the uk.

Will let you know how they are when they arrive this week.
