Engine vent rattle
« on: July 30, 2014, 01:08:11 PM »
Coming from, still have, a 71 R50/5 I noticed a distinct rattle coming from under the starter cover of my new to me 82 R65LS.

I can say without a doubt that the rattle is coming from under the starter cover because I put a stethoscope to the starter cover and the sound is emenating from a bit aft of the weep hole. If it where a /5 I would say the reed valve is rattling but on a R65 I am a new owner. The sound is like a nut in a small pill bottle, metal on plastic rattle.

The question is - is that the "norm" for a healthy R65 or.....?

R65's have much the same engine breather valve as other airheads. I'm not sure if an 82 still had the disk type breather or the later reed type. The disc type can certainly make a honking noise but I wouldn't describe it as a rattle.

We have a knowledgeable forum member roosting in Bedford, Texas that you might actually know. Mike Crenshaw, aka on the R65 forum as 'Bengt Phorqs'. He usually hits up BMW of FTW on Saturday mornings just to soak up their free coffee and donuts.

BMW of FtW is moving. Somewhere on the other side of 820W. But he has the right idea, free brew. He probably knows me and my R50/5. I do most of my airhead socializing with Boxer Bruce.

The 1981+ models should definitely all have the reed valve breather installed.   I've never had an issue on my 82 R65LS with the valve but I suppose it is possible if things have gotten very gunked up in there it could be noisy or it could possibly break/crack.

Nice looking URAL you have - do you get to use 2WD much where you are?
