Replacement ignition switch
« on: July 28, 2014, 05:03:45 AM »
After all my efforts on cleaning up the front end I would like to get a more discreet ignition switch and possibly relocate it or just mount it on the bars.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good direct replacement for the original. I have just installed an acewell and amended all the wiring so I would like to keep any wiring changes to a minimum.

Cheers.

Would something like this be usable as a replacement for an ignition switch ?

Not too sure on the wiring though.

I ordered a universal 3 way switch for $20 as a replacement, running the headlight and side lights off the accessory circuit. this may prove problematic as i haven't tested the lighting yet, but on/off is fine.

When first purchased, my 1981 R65 had an ignition switch sourced from a riding lawnmower! Discovered that little issue when I stopped at Lone Star BMW in Austin and inquired about a replacement key. Oops.

Had the same terminals as BMW OEM so everything worked as it should.

I have decided to try and keep the original rather than replace, but need to take it apart to relocate.
Does anyone know how to remove the nut and face of the ignition switch?

Looks like you need a special tool to take the top off as it has two holes in it. Does anyone how to remove this?

I guess it might just be a couple of holes to place something in and turn.

Worked a treat. Forums are an invaluable source if you're a novice builder.

You ideally want something that fits the holes properly without damage I use either suitable sized drill bit shanks or I have a set of needle files with handles that fit perfectly.
