Ignition Switch Wiring
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:54:26 AM »
I'm fitting an Acewell to my 84 R65LS as the clocks are beyond repair.
I'm in the middle of re-wiring and at the moment the ignition switch is connected but all the dash wires (rev counter plug, indicators, indicator light and speedo light) are not connected.

At the moment, the bike starts and runs and the horn works whatever the position of the switch (even off) although the switch operates the other parking and headlight functions correctly. Will this correct itself once the other wires are re-connected or is there a problem with my switch? It was working ok before it came to bits, and i'm pretty sure that it's re-connected correctly.

Except for the grey wire on #58 those colours look all wrong to me.

Starting top left and working anticlockwise on your diagram these are what the terminal numbers, wire colours and functions should be.

56 is Green/purple  Headlight

15 is green  feed to ignition circuit

30 is Red   +12 volt feed (either of the centre two connections)

58 is Grey  Side lights

Thanks. Got it switching on and off with the red/green/grey connected. The other colours of my wiring are slightly different.
I have:

Red
Grey
Green
Yellow/white
2 x green/black wires (fastened to one connector)

I'm sure that the wiring/loom is original, it certainly doesn't look to have been modified. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

The green / black wires, are for an option that was available for these bikes, a voltmeter and I think an analog clock was available as well .

That connector does not go on the ignition switch .

If you don't have the optional instruments, the connector is not connected to anything .

They must of changed the colours on the later models which is unusual as they tend to stick to standard colours at least for the basics like live, switched live and earth. The terminal numbers and functions are based on a DIN standard and not something that BMW dreamed up so I would expect they would be same on all 5 position R65 ignition switches. For example 56 always means headlight, 30 is a direct connection from the battery +ve and 15 is a switched +ve feed from the ignition switch.

It was the double green/black wire that was causing the problem. I think it was just loose originally and since it is the same length and has the same connector as the other ignition switch wires I put 2 and 2 together and got 5!

Works fine without it connected. Thanks all.
