'83 R65 ignition switch wiring - HELP!
« on: June 09, 2014, 05:03:11 PM »
Hey Guys,

I'm the idiot who took his wiring harness apart and didnt make note of where each wire for the ignition switch goes... Thus far fiches have proved less then helpful so im hoping you guy can help out! See pics below.

My first issue. There are 5 positions on the ignition switch but only 4 are marked by a number (15,58, 30, 56)

There are 5 groupings of wires (also, im color blind so bare with me)
1 Red
1 Green + a lighter color
1 Green
1 Grey
1 with 2 light green + black wires in it

My guess is the Red goes to the lone 56. Beyond there im useless.

These shoudl help you - from my 1982 R65LS:

Note that the 3rd terminal (from the left, going across the 'top' row) is left unconnected-

The double-green wire connector is actually switched power for use with an accessory, such as a voltmeter.  Otherwise, it is left unconnected.

Here's a diagram showing both Euro and US switch connections which should enable you to check the switch operation with a meter, buzzer or test light.

30 is Red   +12 volt feed (either of the centre two connections)

15 is green  feed to ignition circuit

58 is Grey  Side lights

56 is Green/purple  Headlight

Don't know about the Green/black wires but might be the brake light switch

An economical digital camera should be part of everyone's tool kit. Take multiple images from different angles prior to disassembly. You, too, could become a victim of the dreaded CRS affliction. Can't Remember S**t.

Having seen some terrible images created by cell phones, I wouldn't trust them for decent close ups.

Just a follow up question, my switch has been drilled out and needs to be replaced. since stock is unobtanium, and i'm not using a stock mount a universal 3-poler seems to be the best replacement. in that case i would add the headlight and side lights to the accessory circuit? or is there a better replacement/method? here is a typical universal switch...
