Powder coating rear wheel problem
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:15:34 PM »
Hey,
I had my wheels powdercoated the other week and they did the inside of the rear wheel, masking off the brake surface, but there is a load of grit and overspray on the splines and in the space around the splines.

Would it be ok to flush this out with solvent or brake cleaner and leave to dry? I don't have compressed air access, but I have picked out most of it. I did ask them to cover and mask, but hey oh.

Cheers
James.

Bits of stiff wire, toothpicks, ear buds and the solvent off your choice would seem the way to go. I would not "flood" the area for fear of what the solvent might do to your nice new finish.

Also, I am intrigued as to the original of your brake drum. 8.71" is not a form of measurement that the good Germans were likely to have used.

It's the same in my LS wheel.  That drum is bigger than the standard R65 by the way and requires LS only shoes.

As for cleaning, Id place the wheel on sawhorses or between some tables, milk crates, etc. with the splines underneath and spray up into the area with brake cleaner.  The orientation of the wheel and velocity of the spray should flush most of the solids out while keeping the mess to a minimum.  Might be wise to wear some eye protection and mask off your nice new finish

Thanks for the suggestions. Sometimes you just need some clarification from other people to know you are doing the right thing.

Thanks
James

Noticed that. Any type of dimensional stamping from the Motorrad Mothership would me in metric specs, yes?

Agree, what pricked my interest is that I have a wheel that the brake lining is nearly worn out, if someone makes a replacement insert, I'm interested.

Not the brake drum tolerance... at least on the LS.  Mine's exactly the same.

Our original tires came in inch sizes too
