Is the 'KILL ' switch in the correct position ??

Remove the fuel tank and you can press on the top of the start relay and close the contacts manually usually this will work, the starter should rotate, so make sure the transmission is in neutral if you do this .

You should not have caused any starter issues with replacing the alternator rotor .

Not directly... it just opens up the possibility to mix up wires or leave them disconnected.

The bike requires either the clutch switch or neutral switch to be activated for the starter to work.  You might want to test the clutch switch while you're at it or you could try grounding your neutral switch wire and giving the start button the old college effort.

Rotor and stator are all about charging the battery. The start and running ignition systems are handled by the battery.

If you have a well charged battery, you could start up and ride for several miles before  the engine gives up on you due to a depleted battery.

Try looking at that starter button. Perhaps open the switch housing and jump the switch. See if the starter attempts to engage. Quick check of the starter relay is to put a finger on the relay and, with a good button, you should feel and perhaps hear a 'click' as the relay engages. Bench testing a relay is pretty much the same technique.

That's what I thought. Just threw me for a loop as it happened RIGHT after I changed out the rotor. I thought "what the HECK did I do?"

I'll proceed and test the starter relay and starter button, and check back in with results.

Hello,
If the lights (charge, NEUTRAL, and oil ) are on, I bet you've  a switch contact problem.
Try to put a +12V at the black wire in the same connector with the blue wire coming from the regulator to the dash board. If the starter turns then there is a bad contact/switch somewhere.

Well, I don't have the neutral light because I know the sender is bad, but the charge and oil lights are working just fine.

Well, yet another embarrassing moment. I went out to the garage yesterday afternoon, determined to find out why the r65 wasn't starting. I began to examine everything closely and then I noticed...

What is that strange wire connector just hanging there? Oh, is that the clutch switch I disconnected to clean?

 

Yep, I failed to reconnect the clutch switch. Plugged it back in and...

Ha!  Hey, in my defense the rotor WAS bad!
