Those two valves do not have any bearing on the oil cooler, item #6 is in the oil filter cavity, it's the ball at the far end of the cavity, and it opens and bypasses oil when the differential pressure across the filter is too great. I have seen in print, that in low temps and heavy oil ,pressures of 165 psi are possible in the oil filter cavity, and can cause the oil filter to collapse. The other valve inside the engine ( it looks like it is in the oil cooler, but in reality it's in the engine case behind the timing cover ) regulates the oil pressure of the lubrication system inside the engine case well after the oil cooler circuit.

That sounds logical.  I wonder how much oil pressure would ever be at the oil cooler then?

Unfortunately I cannot help with advise about putting an oil cooler on an R65, but I wanted
to say that you have a very cool looking bike, professor !   Did you do all the aluminum fabrications
yourself ?

Thanks nhmaf,
Yes I made it all.  I have my own auto repair shop for the last 18 years and before that as an aircraft technician.  I had it at the national in Wis. but didn't meet up with any other R65 people.

Here's a link to my photos of this year and in the family album from past years.

Bob, I'm pretty sure that my '95 RT has the thermostatic valve/adapter...

Sorry that we missed you at the wisconsin rally, professor - I was there (though not with my R65) with my cousin,
and we met up with suecanada and one or two others while there.    Siouxzy's R65LS was with the Oak and the airheads
for a while - I didn't think that I could miss an R65 as modified as yours, but I guess that I didn't see it, somehow !

Looks like you're right Justin, the RT and RS bikes still have the valve, the standard and GS models don't appear to have it installed. I got my info from San Jose BMW parts manager, I was told that BMW stopped putting them on the bikes in the early ' 90's, so I assumed it was all bikes . So much for believing what you're told these days.

I installed the older version of this oil cooler kit on my R65 a few years back.
http://www.wuedo.de/cgi-bin/webseller?action=link&response=product.html&ID=322431188560898&select=PRODUCT_INFO&scope=product.teilenr='11-42-00-20'&scope2=groups.stammnr='11'

I purchased the kit at a discount from cascade bmw when they stopped selling Wudo products.  The kit on the official german Wudo web site shows a few more parts than my kit came with and it looks like oil lines have been updated.

The kit was pretty easy to install, except for having to purchase the biggest screwdriver I could find to remove (and install the new one) the tube that goes through the middle of the oil cooler.
