hey guys ,are the brembo calipers a straight swap for the ate on the 79 r65? any one know?

Can't tell for '79 but did it on my '82 and it was a walk in a park. Think it should be the same

No. But I had one calliper dead (badly corroded inside and a corroded piston) and the dealer only had a pair of Brembo on the shelf. As I used the bike (my only vehicle) to go to work I was quite forced to buy a pair of Brembo.
Performance wise, IMHO they are the same. But as per longevity/ease of repair/ pads finding, etc, there is a huge difference.
When I did the swap, it costed me an arm and a leg... (I was broke at the time. Still feel the sting...)

mine works but is not v good , going to do a strip i think , have the disc skimmed etc , all the cheap options first !

If you do cut the discs to get rid of the "wavies" be sure not to go below minimum spec thickness. As you work both side of the brake rotor, there's not very much meat that can be removed before you create a nice paper weight.

Not sure about UK options but I had my rotor redone by Spigler. http://www.spieglerusa.com/brakes/bmw-rotor-conversions.html

It is, as the kids say, OMFGWTFBBQ?!? good.  So good.  Downside is that the rotor gets shipped out, so the bike isn't rideable until it returns.  And the price, of course.  But I think their repair was cheaper than a new rotor from BMW.

we've a guy over here makes em from scratch , the disc doctor is what he goes by , might check him out lol , soooo, no difference 'tween ate n brembo in performance ? so i cant take it down to .5 of a mill then monty? doh lol

I don't suppose you still have the ATE calipers by any chance? If you do I would like to offer you a very small amount of money for them and (I suspect) a very large amount of money to post them to me.
