Fairing Question
« on: April 11, 2014, 04:30:45 PM »
I am the proud owner of a 1987 R80 which, of course, is a monolever.  I need help determining if the fairing from an R65/R45 will mount on my cycle without modification.

Anyone who owns both a dual shock and a monolever please have a look at the following link and let me know what you think.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261444498141?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thanks in advance,

William

I don't know for sure but the clue would be in the size of your headlight. Twin shock R45/R65's had a smaller headlight than other airheads. Did the mono R65 revert to the larger headlight ?

It is about 8" from ring to ring.

That is about an inch larger than the R65/45.  I believe the only other Airheads with the smaller headlight were the /5 models - I think...

It's a "bikini" type fairing so you could probably take a saber-saw and enlarge it the hole...

Surely that will sell for much more! :o

The fairing has a 7.5inch hole. I think it might fit, but it would cover the chrome ring.

As you can see here, I'm using a much smaller headlamp since the original one was missing.

Excellent information!  One more question.  Do you think the fairing would mount using the hardware supplied?

Any real changes in the front end on the monolever compared with the dual shock?

12 hours left in the auction and I am still considering a bid even though the shipping cost is high.

I don't know what the actual differences are between the front ends of the dual shock vs. the monolever, but I can tell the monolever shares it's frame with the R80, and is larger than the twin's frame. Also, the twin shock has a unique smaller frame.

Thanks Dave!  I know both the R65 monolever and the R80 monolever are on the same frame.  But the question is will that older fairing from the dual shock mount on the monolever frame without modifications.

Thanks to all and still hoping for a definitive answer.

I've got that same fairing. BMW calls it a cockpit cover. I'm thinking of trying to make a small windscreen to attach to it.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.  With a little over 2 hours left on this auction, I have decided not to pursue it.  The risk versus reward (high shipping, unknown fitment) is just too great at this time.

It sold pretty cheap but the shipping was triple the selling price!

Even with shipping that's just a bit more than half what MaxBMW lists it for new.
