Ignition Control Unit

Has anyone heard of lubricating ( with white lith. grease) the ignition control unit? The former owner of my 1982 R65 told me that this had to be done occasinally. If so how and what parts?

The ignition control module, it should be around the voltage regulator .

You remove the two screws and seperate the heatsink from the module , clean both surfaces off and apply ' heat sink ' compound, not grease .

You can get some at Radio Shack, if you have a store near you, can't tell where you call home, whether it's in the US or not .

To add to what Bob said, isopropyl alcohol will easily remove the old thermal compound.  You want the new layer to be thin; the stuff is made to fill the small gaps between the ICU and the heat sink, not provide a big "sandwich layer."

You can find suitable compound at every computer shop doing assembly. It is *also* used to mount processor heat sink on the processor's module. You can also find it at every shop selling electronics components (resistors, diodes, resistors...etc)
One syringe last a life time ....

+1 on what Luca said about applying only a thin layer of heat transfer compound.

Truth is compared to the metal itself this stuff is a relatively poor conductor of heat.  You only need enough to fill in any small gaps where metal to metal contact does not occur.
