R65 1981 upper brake line
« on: March 07, 2014, 02:12:05 PM »
I have a 1981 R65 produced in 11/1980. The bike has the original brakeline and metal pipe from the splitter to the master cylinder.
I have bought a new Goodridge stainless steel brake line from the splitter to master cylinder. I want to get rid off the metal pipe because it looks a lot better without it.

I have this brake line, BRA39826 which should fit a 1981 model:

I do not understand how it will fit my splitter and master cylinder.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Thanks you for posting this. My '82 has a single disc, but the length of braided hose, parts needed, and prices are all over the place! Hopefully the answer to your question will be applicable to mine too! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

First thing I have to ask, because I can't tell from the photo link, is it a male or female hose ends on the brake line ??

From the description of the hose, it's a lower hose pre 1985 bikes .

Not the line from the master cylinder to the splitter .

The one in your link says its a lower line, which would go from the splitter to the caliper. I think both upper and lower would have the same fittings, one end goes into a rigid pipe, the other goes into a female port. So the only difference would be length, seems to me.

I just had both lines made, I brought the originals to a shop(omniquip) and they made replacements. I went with rubber, and kept the original hard lines and the splitter.

Hello,
My '82 had a banjo fitting on the MC and a male coupling on the splitter.
As I was advised the banjo on SS lines can break, I wondered what I will get. The local BMW guru provided an upper line with two male couplings and a metal line to fit on the splitter..
So now, my '82 has the same fitting than yours ;-)

It is picture no 4 on the side I linked to. It will need banjo bolts at both ends. The orignial Bmw line has male thread at the master cylinder end and female thread at metal pipe end which connects to the splitter.

Here is a diagram from Realoem:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=0358&mospid=51896&hg=34&fg=32

One upper line with banjo fittings and one with male, femal threads and metal pipe. The easy solution is to buy a line with male and female threads and use the metal pipe.
My 1981 has Ate calipers.
