Frame differences for adding parts?
« on: January 17, 2014, 07:01:17 PM »
The frames used for the '79-80 models were the same as those for '81-'84 bikes, weren't they? Does anyone know if there is a difference in the fitting of R65 engine guard/crash bars between the earlier and older bikes? I'm asking to see if a set of guards from a '79 bike will fit my '81 without modification. Are there any other "peculiarities" I should know about? Thanks.

Hello !
BMW have two frames on their catalogue :
46 51 2 301 717 for bikes up to 9/80 and 46 51 2 301 617 for bikes after 9/80. Both priced new at 1700 € .... Shipping is free in Europe for this price ;-)
IMHO the only difference are the centre stand and lateral stand fitting, but I could easily been mistaken on these subjects.

The sub frames are definitely different but I suspect Georges is correct about the main frame as it's doubtful they would be any diffences in major dimensions like engine mounting points.

I'm sorry, the R65 is an '82, not an '81: I have fat fingers! :P

But though, your opinions are that the main frame is the same for a '79 and an '82, and basically that parts/accessories should fit all twin shock R65s? That would be my original thought as well.  I can not understand why the main frame would have differences between the earlier and later models, but stranger things have happened!

There may be differences in the electrics mounting area on the right side of the backbone.

But I'm pretty sure the crash bars for twin shock R65s are all the same. To make sure, pull up the number on the fiche and see what they cross reference with.

I cannot imagine any problem with the crash bars.

For R45/65 twin-shock frames, the only significant differences were the electricals on the main frame and the upper mounts on the subframe, as noted above.
