Stutters when accelerating.
« on: August 14, 2007, 06:41:43 AM »
A while ago after riding for app. 3/4 of an hour at 70-75 mph the engine lost power but didn't stall. I pulled into the curb and waited a couple of minutes before starting. The engine started and ran willingly but have since stuttered when accelerating.

I am inclined to blame the problem on a clog in the fuel line but if any of you gurus have another suggestion please come forward.

And yes, I am still alive and kicking but have been building a new summer cottage  8-) which has taken most of my spare time and my riding time  :(

greetings from a warm and sunny north

Try pulling the ht lead and doing a connectivity test while waggling the pulg cap. The vibe off the motor can crack the wire core where it goes into the cap on o/e and pattern o/e leads making the lead lose connectivity when it get warm.

I won't say it is not electrical, but the first thing I would check is for a hole in a diaphragm.

Also check fuel flow.  Have you looked at your screens lately?  What is in your float bowls?  Any water?

What color are your spark plugs?

I would have to go along with a possible crack or hole in one of the carb diaphrams as well.

I was cruising along when my cycle did a quick stumble, 10th of a second thing. The tach showed a drop of about 1000 rpm’s. Did this a few times before I go back home from running errands around town. The fuel filter had been on there awhile so I replaced it.............end of problem.....I think. This was one of those tiny little filters......knew I shouldn’t have put it on. But when ya live in the boondocks you settle for what’s in stock sometimes, rather than wait for a order to come in. Ya might try replacing yours.

Pop off those float bowls and check for any debris in them. Dump out the gas, clean, then take out main jets and check for blockage. If blocked, run a small wire through them to clean them out. Put the float bowls back on and ride away. This has happened to me a few times over the years. Easy to do and only takes about 5 minutes per side......Dew.

Hi trolle

I vote Diaphram.

Do a compression check to see if anything major has happend in the course of a major tuneup.  Check the diaphrams when you get to the carbs.  The last time this happened to me, the diaphram was not holed but had slipped out of the groove along the edge near the top (a simple fix on my flat top carbs).

Good luck

Emptied the tank, dismantled the pet-cock and the filter inside the tank. The filter was as I suspected clogged with small flakes of paint. I cleansed it all out with compressed air and put it back in place.

The engine still stutters a little when I try to accelerate from 2,800 rpm but not at higher rpms. I might have to check the carbs, even though they were thoroughly checked 3,000 miles ago.

Apart from that the engine which has done 60,000 miles is running very well, especially after the cleansing of the fuel filter.

Thank you for your inputs

greetings from a warm and semi grey north

Speaking of filters: There must be a four-letter word filter on this forum, English not being my first language I made the mistake of hyphenating the word petcock which immidiately became something I do not know what is: a pet-cock ??

trolle,

regarding your question about "pet-c0ck":  (petcock)

In the United States, "pet" can be an action word, like to "pet your cat".

"C0ck", on the other hand, is a common slang term for the male pen!s.

I'll let you do the math!  ;)

I had to use special characters to make the words appear.  The forum automatically edits "naughty" words.
Sorry Justin. :(
