1983 R65LS Seat Hinges
« on: November 06, 2013, 07:08:23 AM »
I recently picked up a 1983 R65LS, and the rear seat hinge is broken.  I own other /5 and /6 BMW's, and understand how to replace the 3 screw hole seat hinges on those models, but the R65LS hinges look like they are riveted in.  Does anyone sell replacement hinges for the R65LS ?  How are they replaced ?

Thanks

Dan

Not just on the LS models are the hinges riveted in place; both my '81 and '83 "standards" have large rivets holding the hinge bracket to the seat pan.

There may be the chance of another BMW model's individual hinges possibly fitting. You'll still have to grind the heads off the rivets and figure a solid way to add on the new hinge bracket without having to remove the upholstery and pad.

Maybe call Bob's BMW and talk to one of their knowledgeable Airhead parts people. I forget the primary go-to guy and which store... Anybody recall?

One of mine was broken.  Best I could tell from multiple parts fiche, etc. is that the hinge is not sold separately.  I found one person on ebay advertising the hinges, but the cost was something like $90.
Wait, here is a used set... http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Mono-Shock-Seat-Mount-Hrdwr-HINGES-LATCH-POST-R65-R80-R80RT-R100RS-R100RT-/270921415064?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f142cb998&vxp=mtr
You can buy a whole used seat for that price, which is the route I went.
Good luck...

I saw stainless steel aftermarket pairs here, but they were meant for the larger airheads. The hinges can be seen near the bottom of the page:

I've the same problem. My intention is to braze the broken bits together in situ to avoid the "rivet" problem. It's in the "get a round tuit list."
