'80 mufflers on a '79

Will mufflers from an '80 model fit my '79?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on these they look ok to my eye... Although they almost look like 2 of a kind rather than left & right

Thanks, I appreciate all the help I get from this forum  :)

No difference in mufflers from 78 - 84 as far as I am aware.

Hard to say for certain what make they are. They could be the original Zuena's given the bolt on brackets and that makes them old. Others will chime in to confirm but some aftermarket mufflers have the brackets welded on.

Chrome mufflers don't last that well. When I got my bike it had the originals still fitted. They looked good but turned out to be paper thin.

Thanks for the info, Barry.

I've seen references to Emgo as lower-priced replacements, but I'm not sure exactly which model to get. Also, I want a quiet bike and I'm not sure how loud the Emgo's would be.

For a full Franklin, those OEM chromes look pretty rusty. Couple spots appear to be rusted all the way through. Perhaps keep shopping... ?

Edit: Had to locate the source for my '83 R65's EMGO replica Norton Commando "Peashooter" mufflers. The roarty ones.  ;D

This vendor is a fairly small outfit in Florida but provided quick service and free shipping. These BMW replica mufflers are factory quiet. I've heard them 'run' on a BMW Airhead. Yes, a few bucks more than the eBay offering but EMGO does produce a quality replacement. Check out the muffs and the vendor.

Other airheads use 38mm or 40mm pipes R65's are 35mm.

When new, Zuena's are very quiet indeed so choose carefully if you want them quiet. If Monte says the Emgos are are quiet they should be a good bet.  I can tell you that the Sito's I have are vastly louder than the originals or at least they were until I fitted extra baffles.

As an attempt to keep corrosion at bay, when I replaced mine I poured in a thin solution of waxoyl and sloshed it around before emptying the excess. I guess ordinary oil would work too.

The only difference in the exhaust spec is the later models have two cross over pipes instead of one as far as I am aware.

Thanks for the link, those look pretty nice. Good eye spotting he rust-thru on the used pair, I hadn't caught that.

The vendor Monte linked to provides spacers for 38mm pipes. Could I use these on an R65 with the appropriate spacers?

You bet you can. They are an interesting, and invisible, bit of kit. The Norton repops fit the R65 headers exactly so didn't need the adapters. They may still be around the shop... somewhere.

"Norton repops"? Are those Emgo's?

EMGO repops on the '83 R65. EPCO stainless steel slightly used but good price units on the '81 R65.

Both muff designs are louder than stock but not offensive to the LEO living next door to me. ;)

Have you considered the Keyhan SS exhausts ? I have them on the R65 since the early 90's and they are still like new. The only difference is that the exhaust becomes yellow instead of the blue the OEM chromed steel gets.
They are also noise compliant; Same rating as the OEM Zeuna. And they bear the appropriate labels for the MOT or the LEO ....

Thanks guys. Both the Epco and Kiehan units look nice, but a little pricey for my budget at this point. I won't have the bike to the point of needing exhaust for a few months, so I'll keep an eye on eBay, etc
