Timing chain replacement
« on: May 21, 2013, 09:04:03 PM »
I am preparing for a replacement of the timing chain/tensioner etc plus crankshaft sprocket on my 1984 R80 St. Any comments from those who have done this job are most welcome( I have printouts of Snowbum's article but would like to hear from any on the forum re their experience doing this job. Otherwise the bike is running very well. I can hear the chain slap coming on and of the power and she is a little rough below 3000 rpm.    Best Regards John Muir

Getting the timing marks lined up can be a job, you can't see crankshaft timing mark due to the bearing on the end .

There's one small paper gasket, looks like a paper washer, don't forget to put that on the timing cover before installation .

It's near the top about center of the cover, it's the only bolt that isn't on the edge of the cover .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Thanks for the heads up re timing marks Bob. I am particularly interested in experiences with pulling and replacing crankshaft sprocket and bearing
with respect to heat application ( how you did it and how much heat it required for the removal and replacement) I have seen differing reports on this item.   Best regards John [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Hello !
I think that on the "modern" motors, the timing cover does not need heating to get out.
I my '82 R65 it was not needed. It came out with careful pulling (the ball bearing is a tight fit and you can't rock the cover to help)

There should be full instructions with photos posted on the tech section by Monte from a couple of years back.  Very thorough job he did.

Look in the Photo Gallery/User Gallery/MontMil/Timing Chain Replacement.
