Changing clutch instructions in the Wiki part;
« on: April 28, 2013, 01:41:46 AM »
Hello !
I lurk a lot on this site to see what I missed since I registered.
I came across the PDF describing how to remove the gearbox to access the clutch.
Good job well documented with plenty of pictures.
It appears that last year I changed the clutch on my '82 R65 and used this exact method.
Then a few weeks after the selection spring in the gearbox broke and I had to remove the gearbox again.
I have the factory maintenance manual (which I did not read the first time... ) and I saw that since 82 BMW does not recommend anymore to remove the swing arm to remove the gearbox.
Instead they advise to advance the engine in the frame as far as it can get. And it's easier, faster and less bothersome on re-assembling.
You have to support the engine on a wood block and a lift. Remove both carbs (not absolutely necessary) then unplug the exhaust pipes from the mufflers. Uncouple the output of the gearbox and remove speedo cable and electrical wiring.
You have to remove the two engine fixation and slide the engine as far front as it would go. This leave enough room to remove the gearbox from the left side.
Easiest and faster. As the bike can sit on it's two wheels, safer too.
Re-assembly is the reverse of this procedure.
I removed the front cover from the engine but, this, too is not mandatory. The two exhaust pipes make perfect handles to move the engine.
Hope this helps.
