83' R65 LS Brembo caliper rebuild kit
« on: April 23, 2013, 12:26:36 PM »
I'm in the process of collecting all the parts necessary to completely rebuild the front brake system on my 83' R65 LS, as this is the area which has given me the most problems since ownership.  My problem is I can't seem to find any data on which Brembo caliper came standard with the LS models, so I can't order rebuild kits.  My calipers don't seem to have any markings on the outside of the assembly.  Can anyone offer any leads or advice?  Thanks!

Hello !
As far as I know, the LS calipers are the same as the non LS version.
An email to motobins or equivalent should clarify this.
You can also check on RealOem give it your VIN and see if the same vintage R65 has same or different calipers.

I have 2 genuine Brembo rebuild kits here in front of me sent to me for my '84 LS. The Brembo number on the packaging is 120274110. The suppliers part number is BRA37234.

I hope this helps. I haven't used these kits yet so I can't guarantee that they are correct but they should be, the German guy I bought them from speciallised in R65 parts.

OKAY Now you have me worried, Motorworks show the R45 / R65 caliper rebuild kit as the BRA54807 and the ones I have (BRA372334) as for the '2 valve R series twins 1977-84', so I await someone elses confirmation as to which kits we actually need.

http://www.motobins.co.uk/bmw-parts.php?model=R Series 2 valve Twin

Moto-bins confirms the difference but only shows their part number and the BMW part number not the Brembo kit number.

The kit for the ATE and the Brembo kit are different, the piston seals may be the same, not sure, the dust covers are different between the two calipers and the pins anti-rattle springs are different and can't be used between the two different calipers .

I think the calipers on a R65 LS are Brembo F08.  I could be very wrong.  When I get back to my shop I gata measure dimensions with a pair of verniers.

Seal kit Part No. 120.2741.10

every part you can think of here.

The Brembo units on my '81 and '83 "regular" R65s are F08.

Okay, I believe this Cycle Brakes website confirms that the R65's have Brembo F08 calipers (38mm pistons and 108mm mounting centres).
http://www.cyclebrakes.com/html/brembo_caliper_3.html

(The F05 calipers have 32mm pistons and 94mm mount centres.)

I haven't had my calipers apart so I can't measure the piston diameter but the mount bolts are definately 108mm apart.

Therefore if the BevelHeaven website is correct the seal kits are the ones I was sent from Germany ie: 120.2741.110.

This also means that both Motorworks and MotoBins websites are INCORRECT showing that the R45/R65 kits are different from the 1977 - 1984 Airheads.

Unless the R45's and early R65's have different Brembo calipers or are they all fitted with ATE's?

My bike originally came wih an ATE caliper, and replaced with a Brembo unit from a a wrecked R65. I measured this more than five times due to the discrepancies found online, thus I am pretty sure the R65 equipped Brembo calipers have 36mm pistons. Look at my post about calipers at the FAQ section.

I also have a brembo caliper from a wrecked R100 and the piston measures 38mm. The larger displacement airheads use calipers made by brembo but uses a slightly different shell from the generic F08 shell, hence incompatible with R65 fork lowers.

It would be interesting if someone could obtain a 38mm F08 from older lambreta's or ducati's and install them on a R65.
