Taller Handlebars

After many years I have a BM in the garage again, its a sweet little LS that needs a bit of loving to show herself at her best and it will be long slow process a bit at a time.
I would love to start by fitting some taller bars as the old back prefers it on longer trips, has anyone used raisers? if so what type? what about bars, it would be nice not to stuff around with cables if possible.
The advice of this forum would be very much appreciated.

Welcome Dave,

The US type high bars will need new cables and brake hose but there are some options with bars of an intermediate rise like K75S bars that might not. The higher bars are a couple of inches wider as well.

I bent my bars slightly (not easily done) which raised them by 1 inch and pulled them back 1 inch and that was enough to make me comfortable.  That didn't cause any problems at all with cables and I suspect  I could have had bars rise another inch without trouble.

Bars have been discussed recently on a few threads.

Welcome to the herd, Dave. Congrats on your "new" LS.

No way around it, sir... taller bars are going to require longer cables and a hefty dip into the bank account. Be advised your BMW will require 22mm diameter bars as any of the slightly larger aftermarket offerings will over-stress and crack the switch/lever assemblies when tightened down.

Plenty of good info in the links posted. Also, please include the model year of your bike when posting questions. Easy to add it to a sig line or your avatar..

You know, the 90S bars are good compromise between the LS bars and the high rise American bars.  A little higher, and a little wider, so you can sit up more without becoming a sail.  My bike came with the American bars and I have been very happy with the 90S bars.  My tail gets sore before my back.  No need to re-cable either.  All you will need to change is the brake line from the master cylinder to the splitter.

Just my two cents...

Thanks so much for the input, sounds like the 90S will be worth a look.
Your help and expertise is appreciated.

Hello,
I did a conversion from USA high bars to original style low bars on my `83 LS.  I have the original high bars along with longer cables and brake hose. I`m almost positive these higher bars were on the bike when sold new. Not sure if fitted at the factory or the dealer but they are original BMW.
Send me a PM if you have an interest in the high bar conversion parts.

Rick

I found some BMW bars on flea-bay with 12" pull back.  That got me into a more upright position behind the Luftmeister fairing.

Good luck.
