I stripped my 1980 R65 down so I could
# 1. Get gear box sorted, as I suspect the cam shock absorber things are worn as there was a graunch that I could feel through the pegs when the gearbox oil was warm when changing 1st to 2nd.
# 2. Blast & recoat frame, swinging arm etc, and all other frame parts, as they were in a poor state, and were so when I bought bike 4 years or so back.
#3 Paint bike a nice shade of black to get away from the hideous purple it has been.
I am OK with getting all the above sorted, and will rebuild what needs doing as I put bike back together now frame is done. I also have some great local expert sources to do what I can't.
I don't know whether to dig into the engine or not. I have tried to be good about checking my valves, and changing the oil and filter. When it was last running, I had taken her for a motorway trip of a couple of 100 miles, and the engine was sweet with no probs and good economy. So should I strip heads to check valves as a matter of routine anyway given engine is off bike? (Not that this really makes it any easier than when engine is in the frame....). Common sense says yes, laziness says get engine back in frame. Reported mileage is about 50K miles, so barely used, but I have no info on what work has been carried out on engine in the past.
Any advice appreciated
