Bags 86 r65
« on: October 20, 2012, 06:10:10 PM »
I have had a had a hard time trying to find bags fr my bike. Since I have a mono shock I can't use bags from an earlier version. I was told that k series bikes up to about 94 should fit my bike. Can anyone confirm this or any suggestions on aftermarket bags.

You can get K panniers for monos, but the racks are different. I've seen K racks modified to fit.

Thanks. I did see that they look different . I guess I will have to look after market if I can't find originals .

I have an '86 (so monoshock) and had bags mounted originally.  Still have the mounts, the bags are a little, er.. worse for wear.

I saw recently that the bags I want/need are still available..

"frame / fairing / mirrors" -> "panniers / topboxes"

I'm not sure where to find the mounting racks though.

'86 R65 / '84 motor ~72000 miles. SS lines, Spiegler rotor, Progressive monoshock, Keihan silencers, a piece of Pichler fairing.

I have the Saddlemen semi-rigid bags and mounted them using brackets for a V800. The brackets are U-shaped with the mounting holes 15cm apart, and mount (with 1/4" of bending) to the frame under the seat using existing holes. Then I used U-bolts to install the bags on the brackets. Though not a purist solution, the whole thing cost like $125 and it works.

Got Hepco and Becker mounts and bags last year from Bob's BMW in Maryland.  They had the indent for the BMW logos, which they also sell.  Everything fit perfect.

Sorry to hijack this a bit, but I've just bought a set of panniers like these along with the frames. They're from an '81 R100 - as someone stated elsewhere on here that all airhead frames are the same I'm hoping they'll fit my R65LS ????! Can anyone confirm that please? Thanks

"...all airhead frames are the same," may be a pretty broad, blanket statement. Might need to add a modifier to that statement regarding the different subframe on the SWB R65 and R80.

Your 'new' frames may need some mods to fit. Probably a doable project.

Thanks Montmil. If the modification is going to ruin the frames then I'll get some pukka R65 frames from Motoworks.

Cap'n,

If you buy the frames for your LS, then the little tail rack will not fit due to the different design of the duck tail (LS has a K series tail).  Don't know if this has been mentioned as sometimes with a straight R series set of frames the tail rack can be included.

Thanks for that Burt. The frames I've bought don't include the tail rack, so they may be ok after all. I knew the LS tail was different but hadn't realised it was a K series tail - makes sense now you mention it! I'm picking up the panniers tomorrow so I'll know how things stand then. Thanks again for the info - so much to learn...!

These are the ones -
