coil connections
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:09:05 PM »
Hi everyone, a question on what wires go to the front coil..I was chnging the coil & lost track of which wires connect to th + and - leads on the coil. There are 2 wires coming from the harness and 1 thicker wire from the top of the case..any help is appreciated!
Thanks, Bill

What year is it Bill? Sounds like a 79-80 version with the twin coils.

Usually brown is ground, and a black will go from the points to a coil.

What are the wires available?

Whatever year you bike is, you should have a positive after ignition going to one terminal, and a wire coming either from the points or the ignition module on the other end.  At this last spade, there is also the wire going to the rev counter.
If a dual coil system, there is a wire going to one coil to the other...

Front Coil
#15  black/yellow link wire from #1 on the rear coil
#1    2 black wires, one to the points and the other to the tacho.

Rear Coil
#15 Red/Green +ve feed
#1   black/yellow link wire to front coil

If your coil is marked +ve and -ve rather than 15  and 1 then +ve = 15 and -ve = 1.   Getting the terminations correct is important as although the ignition will work with the wires swapped you will get a weaker spark due to incorrect polarity.
