Ultra sonic clean what you think??

Just some results using my 10L ultrasonic cleaner. The reason i opted for the ultrasonic is the fact that i don't have much experience working on bikes, so it enables me to clean parts without having to take them completely apart. Heres the pics it works fairly decent?!?!

Barry, they're good for bright metals not great on certain nuts and bolts. I gave that carb another dip and it came out better.

I got a 1.5 gallon ultrasonic recently but haven't used it yet. This is supposed to be THE BEST way to clean carbs. I am curious what to use for a cleaning agent. I think I've heard of using simple green.

I would still suggest that a strip down before cleaning be advisable.  You would not want loads of dislodged crud floating around in the passage ways in the carbs.

Take the opportunity to rebuild carbs with new jets and needles.

Same on the calipers.
You need to know what your pistons look like (corrosion) and you probably want to replace the seals.
They require a hefty torque on the two large fasteners holding them together, but that is no big deal.

There is a small o-ring that goes between a passage common to the two halves.  This is NOT included in the rebuild kit, for some reason.  We have a member here (Mike V) that bought a package of 50 of these small o-rings.  He is in California.  You should check with him about getting a couple from him or determining the size if you want to look for some locally.

New pistons are hard to find.   If really bad, you may need to have new ones made.

Looking at Rob's piston reminds me of when I did mine I didn't have as much corrosion on the pistons out sealing surfaces but the inside was quite rusty just like Rob's

What does everyone do to treat the inside of the pistons ? It seems to me that unless kept under control rust from this area could migrate around the lip and on to the piston seal area.

Yes a full service on the brake calipers is recommended, i was lucky enough the previous owner replaced the pistons. The ultrasonic is good for taking the grime off the nuts and bolts before plating aswell. I use a solution called Tickopur, r33 is good for general cleaning not very strong and wont stain your light metals and r27 is good for the really bad stuff high acid content. I use a 10l cleaner and mix it at 5%....

Ahh ha! I see you did the ultra sound with the cables still hooked up to the carbs. I assume you are trying to aviod resyncing the carbs. I dont think thats a good idea, and you really should do a full tear down of the carbs. During the ultrasound cleaning you may have gotten your cleaning fluid on the top half of the vacum diaphrams and that wont come out easily. Also, I cant tell from the pics, but you should definitely take the jet and idle valve out for cleaning. But without taking the diaphram out, it may be difficult to get the main jet back in over the needle.

ive used this in the past to clean out jap carbs that have been stood and its worked well, stripped 'em first tho. i really think you ought to 'bite the bullet' and have a go at stripping , say a scrap carb or engine from a breaker , any courses available at a local college in motor vehicle? be well worth the time!
