Throttle cam-gear/movement question
« on: December 12, 2012, 10:33:04 PM »
G'day all,

I've noticed on my recently purchased 1986 R65l that for approximately the first third of throttle twist grip mechanism, there is a ratchety sensation that can be felt through the grip.   From then on to full throttle,  the action is smooth and uninterrupted.  Is this normal for the action of the throttle cam gear or do I have a problem?    I haven't had any throttles on other bikes feel 'notchy' and uneven like the throttle on this, my first BMW.

Thanks.

You might want to dissemble the grip and clean it a little bit...  greasing the cable might help as well...

Check the teeth on the gears, if they are worn baddly you may have to replace it. There is a revised part that also requires buying a new cover as the centre 'axle' of the gear has been redesigned. I also bought a new twistgrip as the mating teeth were worn as well.

It cost me a lot of money but was a great improvement, my throttle was heavy and it felt like I had to force the throttle to turn past the worn teeth.

Definitely clean and grease at least every year or two. It' a very easy job except for the twin cable version where getting both cables hooked back up is a bit fiddly. Mine is due to be done come to think of it. It's possible to have the gear engagement a tooth out and introduce too much slack.  Some say you can check the gears are engaging properly with alignment dots on each gear but I'm not so sure mine has them.  It's pretty obvious when they are right as there is some initial slack but you can still rotate to full throttle.

I have had the same issue - the teeth get worn on the throttle and the gear,  check and clean both, you might get away with replacing just one, especially if someone has been there before you.

It should be obvious which teeth are worn - as the wear is only on the most used part on the throttle travel.  You might be really lucky and it might be full of hard grease - but I would not count on it.  Either way once inspected and cleaned, put it back together and use until the new part/s arrive.

You could try second hand with Motorworks, they should not send you a badly worn set, especially if you are very specific on what you are asking for and why you need it.

Plenty of fresh grease when you re-install.
