extra bolt? Where does it go???
« on: November 03, 2012, 05:54:39 PM »
Any one have an idea where this bolt may go? it fits a 9/16 socket. I had a mobile mechanic come over I found on craigslist, he took gas tank off and tinkered around to attempt to fix the non starting 1985 r65. I ordered the faulty part(ignition control module) and put it all back together but had the pictured extra bolt. The bike started right up and it ran fine when I took it around the block. Just wondering if anyone recognizes where this may go? The "mechanic" no longer replies to my calls/emails.
any help is appreciated...
thanks

My suggestion would be, remove the fuel tank and look things over .

That's a common piece of hardware and could go anywhere .

Unless it's stainless steel it looks pretty clean for just coming off a "vintage" bike, might not even belong to it...

I was thinking the same. It looks like it might be stainless and it doesn't have an original look about it.

9/16 socket ?   It should be metric - closest spanner size would be 14mm but 14mm is not a preffered metric spanner size.  If you look around the bike I think you'll find all the 8mm nuts and bolts are the more usual 13mm across the flats.

If it really is 9/16 or 14mm that would be strong evidence that it doesn't belong to the bike.

I don't know about your mechanic, but...

I have been know to leave the odd nut, bolt or screw on a "friends" workbench or on the floor near the car or motorcycle. Drives 'em nutty, it does.

I few dribbles of hydraulic fluid below my hangar buddy's main gear was always good for a laugh when a group of friends were visiting.

"WTF! Monte, is that you, again?"

I know of no cable nor wiring bracket that bolts to the R65 fuel tank...

Sounds like a majority opinion Solie.  Did your mobil mechanic ride over on a Harley?  If so, I would return the hardware to him.

Seriously...I don't think I would concern myself too much with it if the only thing that was removed was the tank.

Monte my bike has the bracket.it goes from left to the right.keeps all the cablestight under the tank.I can't remove the tank without removing the bracket.it bolts to the tank with two 10mm boltd.

I've not seen that before. Next time you pull the tank, post a snap.

I do appreciate the simple no tools tank on-tank off bale on my R65s.

My R100S has two thumb screws under the aft end of the tank that are so space-restricted that I usually get a small scratch or two just getting 'em free. Then there's that whole Oops, I dropped it issue. >:(
